Uplands School and Brimble Hill Schools Local Governing Committee

Following a period where the Brunel Academies Trust (BAT) Board of Trustees had direct governance oversight for Uplands School and Brimble Hill School via the Academy Improvement Board (AIB), the board have reviewed their governance arrangements and agreed at their meeting held on the 24th September 2025 to move forward with implementing a Local Governing Committee (LGC). Trustees agreed that during the transition period, the LGC would receive ‘intensive support’ and input from the board through the continued membership of both Trustees and members of the Executive Leadership Team, with a focus on driving forward school improvement.

The priority for the Board of Trustees is to ensure that the local governance arrangements are robust and that governors are enabled to deliver effective leadership and management. The LGC are actively recruiting new governors, and all newly appointed and elected governors will be supported through specific training and mentoring to provide them with clear guidance on their roles and responsibilities in order to ensure that there is a strong LGC in place which will then allow Trustees and Executive Leaders to step back. The effectiveness of governance will be measured and kept under continuous review by the board’s Standards Committee using the Education Performance / Effectiveness model key descriptors which defines whether LGCs receive ‘Core’, ‘Additional’ or ‘Intensive Support’ within the Scheme of Delegation and as described in the Governance Handbook.

If you have an interest in education and would like to make a difference to the outcomes of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) through an interesting and varied volunteer governor role please get in contact with the Trust Governance Lead, Michelle Carter at carterm@brunel.org.uk to find out more about the role. Governors don’t need specific qualifications, just an ability to listen, think through new ideas and decide what is best for the school as part of a team. The LGC is a unique and collaborative group of school employees, parents and carers and volunteers who are dedicated to ensuring that our learners receive the very best education. Becoming a governor is a real opportunity to make a positive difference and become a key part of the school community and we would really like to hear from you.

Contact

The Chair can be contacted via the Clerk, Hannah Boardman, on hboardman@brunel.org.uk or written correspondence can be handed in to the School Office, marked private and confidential.
