Information from Signalong

Signalong, a key word sign-supported communication system based on British Sign Language and is used in spoken word order. It uses speech, sign, body language, facial expression and voice tone to reference the link between sign and word. The difference between Signalong and other sign supported systems is the way we develop our signs. Using our methodology of handshape, orientation, placement and movement we can accurately describe signs without being face to face eg by phone, text etc.

It also means that signs specific to individuals or those with fine motor difficulties can also be translated using the same methodology to ensure understanding. We are often described as much more flexible than others. Whilst specific vocabulary may be taught on our training courses, it is about teaching the skills to access all of our vocabulary. Signalong provides training and resources to assist those with communication difficulties and English as an additional language."
